About the Role
Applications Engineer – Industrial Machinery & Automation
Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 (DOE) + Benefits
Location: Norwich, Norfolk
Permanent Position
Are you an experienced Applications Engineer, Sales Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Design Engineer who enjoys developing practical engineering solutions rather than focusing purely on detailed design work?
We are recruiting for an established and growing engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of industrial machinery and automation solutions for customers across the manufacturing sector.
With strong business growth, continued investment and the support of an established global organisation, this is an exciting opportunity to join a successful engineering business with ambitious plans for the future.
This is an interesting and varied technical role, sitting between the Sales and Engineering teams, where you will help turn customer requirements into practical machinery solutions, technical proposals and cost estimates.
From developing initial equipment concepts and site layouts through to preparing quotations and supporting the sales process, you will play an important part in shaping new machinery projects.
The Role
Working closely with the Sales, Engineering and Project teams, your responsibilities will include:
- Applications Engineering: Reviewing customer enquiries, understanding technical requirements and identifying suitable machinery and equipment solutions.
- Site Layouts: Producing 2D CAD drawings and equipment layouts to demonstrate how machinery and systems can be integrated into customer facilities.
- 3D Modelling: Developing 3D models and concept designs to support machinery proposals and customer presentations.
- Technical Proposals: Preparing detailed technical specifications, equipment proposals and supporting documentation.
- Estimating & Costing: Producing equipment cost estimates and supporting the preparation of commercial quotations.
- Sales Support: Providing technical expertise to the Sales team throughout the enquiry, proposal and quotation process.
- Engineering Collaboration: Liaising with Mechanical, Electrical and Controls Engineers to develop practical, technically feasible solutions.
- Customer Liaison: Discussing technical requirements, proposed layouts and engineering solutions with customers.
- Project Handover: Supporting the transition of successful orders from the Sales team into Engineering and Project Delivery.
About You
We are interested in speaking with technically minded engineers who have experience in industrial machinery, ideally within food processing, packaging, automation or special purpose machinery.
Ideally, you will have:
- A background in Mechanical Engineering, Applications Engineering, Mechanical Design or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience using 2D CAD and 3D modelling software.
- The ability to produce machinery layouts, equipment arrangements or engineering concept drawings.
- A good understanding of mechanical machinery, manufacturing processes and engineered systems.
- Experience preparing technical proposals, estimates, quotations or engineering specifications.
- The ability to interpret customer requirements and develop practical technical solutions.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with both technical and commercial colleagues.
- A proactive, organised and commercially aware approach to engineering.
Industry Experience
We welcome applications from engineers with experience across a broad range of machinery manufacturing and industrial automation sectors, including:
- Special Purpose Machinery / OEM Machinery Manufacturing
- Industrial Automation & Systems Integration
- Packaging & Processing Machinery
- Materials Handling & Conveyor Systems
- Food & Beverage / FMCG Manufacturing
- Pharmaceutical & Medical Equipment
- General Manufacturing & Automated Production Equipment
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys the variety of working across technical design, applications engineering and commercial project development.
Rather than concentrating exclusively on detailed mechanical design, you will be involved in the earlier stages of machinery projects, helping to shape the solutions customers ultimately invest in.
You will have the opportunity to use your engineering knowledge, CAD skills and problem-solving ability while working closely with experienced Sales and Engineering teams.
Interested?
If you have an engineering background and enjoy developing machinery solutions, preparing layouts and working on technically interesting projects, we would welcome your application.
