About the Role
Control Systems Engineer – Industrial Machinery & Automation
Salary: £40,000 - £55,000 pa(DOE) + Benefits
Location: Norwich, Permanent
Permanent Position
Are you an experienced Controls Engineer, PLC Software Engineer or Electrical Design Engineer looking for an opportunity to work across both controls software development and electrical design?
We are recruiting for an established and growing engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of industrial machinery and automation solutions for customers across the manufacturing sector.
With strong business growth, continued investment and the support of an established global organisation, this is an exciting opportunity to join a successful engineering business with ambitious plans for the future.
This is an interesting and varied engineering position, combining PLC and HMI software development with electrical CAD design, control panel design and machinery commissioning.
Importantly, you don't need to be equally experienced in both software development and electrical design to be considered.**
We are interested in hearing from engineers who have:
- Strong experience across both PLC software development and electrical design.
- A strong PLC programming / controls software background, with some electrical design experience and an interest in developing this further.
- A strong electrical design background, with some PLC programming experience and a desire to further develop their controls software skills.
The business is keen to support an engineer who has a solid foundation in either discipline and the enthusiasm to broaden their technical capabilities.
Working on a diverse range of machinery and automation projects, you will have the opportunity to develop control system solutions from initial electrical design and software development through to testing and final commissioning.
With the majority of commissioning carried out remotely and typically only 3–5 site visits per year, this role also offers the opportunity to work on interesting automation projects without the extensive travel often associated with controls engineering positions.
The Role
Working closely with the wider Engineering and Projects teams, your responsibilities will include:
- PLC Programming: Developing, modifying and troubleshooting PLC software using Siemens and Allen-Bradley / Rockwell platforms.
- HMI Development: Designing and programming HMI systems for machinery operation, monitoring and control.
- Electrical CAD Design: Producing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and associated electrical design documentation.
- Control Panel Design: Designing electrical control panels, including component selection, panel layouts and associated documentation.
- Control Systems Development: Developing integrated electrical and software solutions for new machinery and automation projects.
- Testing & Troubleshooting: Supporting software testing, electrical fault-finding, system debugging and machinery optimisation.
- Commissioning: Carrying out remote commissioning and technical support, alongside occasional visits to customer sites.
- Technical Collaboration: Working alongside Mechanical Design Engineers, Project Managers and other engineering colleagues to ensure successful machinery integration and project delivery.
About You
We are interested in speaking with Controls Engineers, Control Systems Engineers, PLC Software Engineers, Automation Engineers and Electrical Design Engineers who enjoy solving technical challenges and want to broaden their experience across both electrical and software engineering.
Ideally, you will have:
- A strong technical background in either PLC controls software development or electrical design, with some practical experience in the other discipline.
- Experience working with industrial machinery, automated equipment or control systems.
- Knowledge of Siemens and/or Allen-Bradley / Rockwell PLC systems.
- Experience developing PLC and HMI software and/or producing electrical CAD drawings and schematics.
- An understanding of electrical control panels, automation components and industrial control systems.
- Good technical problem-solving skills and a practical approach to engineering challenges.
- A willingness to learn, develop new technical skills and take on a broader range of engineering responsibilities.
Industry Experience
We welcome applications from engineers with experience across a broad range of machinery manufacturing and industrial automation sectors, including:
- Special Purpose Machinery / OEM Machinery Manufacturing
- Industrial Automation & Systems Integration
- Packaging & Processing Machinery
- Materials Handling & Conveyor Systems
- Food & Beverage / FMCG Manufacturing
- Pharmaceutical & Medical Equipment
- General Manufacturing & Automated Production Equipment
Previous experience within the food industry is not essential. We are particularly interested in your technical capabilities, experience with machinery control systems and willingness to develop your skills further.
What's on Offer?
- Base salary between £40,000 - £55,000 pa, dependent on experience.
- Opportunity to develop your expertise across both PLC software development and electrical design.
- Interesting and varied projects involving machinery and automation systems.
- Exposure to Siemens and Allen-Bradley / Rockwell control technologies.
- Predominantly remote commissioning, with minimal travel requirements.
- The stability and resources of an established global organisation.
- Continued business investment, growth and long-term career opportunities.
- A collaborative engineering environment with opportunities for ongoing technical development.
Interested?
Whether you're already experienced across both controls software and electrical design, or have a stronger background in one discipline and want to develop your expertise in the other, we would be keen to hear from you.
