If you’re a Mechanical Design Engineer who likes being close to the actual build, this is worth a look.

The business has a strong order book stretching across the next two years, and as a result, they’re looking to strengthen their design team.

They have the flexibility to consider someone who is still relatively early in their career, with around 2+ years’ mechanical design experience, as well as a more seasoned Mechanical Design Engineer who can bring broader project and machinery experience.That means the role can be shaped around the right person rather than forcing every candidate into the same mould.

This isn’t a role where you’ll spend your time producing drawings that disappear into another department, another site, or another country.

The machinery is designed, fabricated and assembled in-house in Blackburn, so you can see your work go from an idea on screen to a finished machine on the shop floor.

You’ll be joining a well-established machinery manufacturer that designs and builds bespoke capital equipment for customers around the world. The business is part of a larger international group, but the Blackburn operation retains the feel of a close-knit engineering team where designers, production and project teams work closely together.

What will you actually be designing?

The role will involve designing bespoke machinery and mechanical assemblies, with a particular emphasis on fabricated and sheet metal components.

Using SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor, you’ll take designs from concept through to detailed manufacture, working closely with production, sales, projects and customers along the way.

Typical responsibilities will include:

• Designing bespoke machinery, assemblies and components
• Producing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings
• Designing sheet metal and fabricated components
• Creating and maintaining bills of materials
• Managing drawings and design information through a PDM system
• Supporting production during manufacture and assembly
• Making design changes based on practical build requirements
• Working with other departments to keep projects moving

What are we looking for?

You don’t need to tick every possible box, but you should have a solid mechanical design background within a manufacturing environment.

Ideally, you’ll have:

• Around 2+ years’ experience in Mechanical Design
• Experience using SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor
• Familiarity with PDM systems
• Previous experience within machinery, equipment or manufacturing
• The ability to produce accurate manufacturing drawings
• A practical engineering mindset

Experience designing machinery, special-purpose equipment, conveyors, process equipment or other fabricated mechanical systems would be particularly relevant.

The manufacturing and assembly teams are on the same site, so rather than designing in isolation, you can speak directly with the engineers building the equipment, see the finished machinery and learn from what happens on the shop floor.
