UK Maintenance Engineer Salary Survey 2026: What Are Maintenance Engineers Really Earning?
What should a Maintenance Engineer earn in the UK in 2026?
For employers recruiting across Food & Beverage and FMCG manufacturing, that question has become increasingly difficult to answer with a single salary figure.
Shift pattern, overtime, electrical capability, PLC skills, experience and the wider employment package can all materially change what an engineer expects, and what an employer may need to offer to attract them.
To provide a clearer picture, SimWest Engineering Recruitment surveyed 310 engineers working across UK Food, Beverage and FMCG manufacturing for our 2026 UK Maintenance Engineer Salary Survey. Maintenance Engineers represented 62% of respondents and form the primary basis of the detailed analysis.

Here are some of the findings that stood out.
What is the average Maintenance Engineer salary in the UK in 2026?
The estimated average base salary for a Maintenance Engineer in the survey is £51,392
The median base salary is £52,500
More than 58% of Maintenance Engineers earn at least £50,000, while more than three-quarters sit between approximately £45,000 and £60,000.
That makes £50,000 increasingly difficult to describe as an exceptional salary for an experienced Maintenance Engineer working within Food & Beverage or FMCG manufacturing.
For many established maintenance engineers, particularly those working shifts or bringing broader electrical and automation capability, £50,000 is now close to the centre of the market rather than the top of it.
That does not mean every Maintenance Engineer vacancy should automatically pay £50,000 or more.
The important question is what sits behind the salary.
An employer needs to consider the working hours, shift structure, overtime opportunity, technical requirements, benefits and responsibilities before deciding whether an offer is genuinely competitive.
How much more do Maintenance Engineers earn for working nights?
One of the clearest findings from the survey is the impact of shift pattern.
Maintenance Engineers working shifts that include nights recorded an estimated average base salary of £53,630
For engineers working patterns without nights, the figure was £47,941
That represents an average difference of £5,689 - around 12%.
This is significant because the difference is greater than the salary variation seen between many UK regions.
It reinforces an important point for employers:
A Maintenance Engineer salary should not be benchmarked by location alone.
A £50,000 Monday-to-Friday days role and a £50,000 rotating day-and-night role are not necessarily competing in the same candidate market.
The commitment involved in nights, rotating shifts and more intensive Continental-style patterns needs to be reflected in the overall proposition.
How important is overtime to Maintenance Engineer earnings?
Base salary only tells part of the story.
The survey found average estimated annual overtime earnings of approximately £4,452
When added to the average Maintenance Engineer base salary, this produces estimated annual earnings of £55,844
Around 83% report receiving some overtime income, while approximately one-third earn an estimated £5,000 or more annually through overtime.
Time and a half was the most commonly reported overtime rate, selected by 56% of Maintenance Engineers.
For employers, this creates an important recruitment issue.
Two companies may advertise apparently identical £50,000 salaries, but the engineer's realistic annual earnings can be very different once overtime availability and rates are considered.
For engineers comparing opportunities, guaranteed base salary and potential overtime should therefore be assessed separately.
Do PLC skills increase Maintenance Engineer salaries?
The survey shows a clear relationship between deeper PLC capability and base salary.
Engineers reporting no PLC experience recorded an estimated average base salary of £49,826
That increased to:
£51,149 for basic PLC fault-finding
£53,654 for confident PLC fault-finding
and
£55,000 for advanced PLC programming.
The most meaningful salary increase appears when engineers move beyond basic interaction with PLCs and can use software confidently to diagnose faults, trace problems and make controlled programming changes.
That matters for employers as much as engineers.
A job specification that simply asks for "PLC experience" may be too vague.
There is a considerable difference between an engineer who can recognise or reset a PLC-related fault and one who can independently diagnose through the software and modify code.
That difference increasingly has a market value.
Is salary the main reason Maintenance Engineers move jobs?
Salary remains the biggest attraction factor, but it is not the whole story.
60% of Maintenance Engineers said they would consider moving employer within the next 12 months.
When asked what could encourage a move:
- 73% selected higher base salary
- 46% selected better training
- 43% selected better benefits
- 42% selected better work-life balance
- 40% selected career progression.
One of the strongest relationships in the survey involved training.
Among engineers who rated their training and development as Poor or Very Poor, 73% would consider moving employer.
Among those who rated training as Good or Excellent, that falls to 37%.
That does not prove poor training alone causes engineers to leave.
But it does suggest that employers trying to solve retention purely through salary may be overlooking an important part of the employment proposition.
What should employers take from the 2026 Maintenance Engineer market?
The survey points towards a market where employers increasingly need to benchmark the whole opportunity, not simply the headline salary.
A competitive Maintenance Engineering offer may need to account for: Base salary + hours + shift pattern + overtime + pension + benefits + technical expectations + development.
For harder-to-fill roles, particularly those involving nights, deeper electrical capability or confident PLC fault-finding, a generic Maintenance Engineer salary benchmark may not be enough.
The strongest employers will understand exactly which elements of the role make it more or less attractive, and price the opportunity accordingly.
What should Maintenance Engineers take from the survey?
For engineers, the findings also demonstrate that market value is not determined by job title or years of service alone.
Shift commitment, electrical capability, PLC knowledge, relevant sector experience, overtime and the wider employment package can all influence the value of an opportunity.
An engineer comparing two jobs should therefore look beyond base salary and ask:
- What overtime is realistically available?
- What rate is it paid at?
- What shift commitment is required?
- What pension and benefits are included?
- What training is available?
- How much technical responsibility will the role carry?
Those questions can materially change the value of an offer.
