Mechanical Fitter / Mechanical Assembler – 4-Day Week

Location: South Leeds, West Yorkshire
Hours: 4-day working week, Monday to Thursday, 37 hours
Contract: Permanent
Salary: Attractive base salary, with typical annual earnings of £45,000 - £60,000 including overtime and allowances
Company: Meltog Ltd

Are you a Mechanical Fitter / Mechanical Assembler looking for a permanent role where you can build proper engineered machinery rather than repetitive production-line assembly?

SimWest Engineering Recruitment is recruiting exclusively for Meltog Ltd in South Leeds, who are looking to appoint several Mechanical Fitters / Mechanical Assemblers to support continued growth within their bespoke machinery build team.

Meltog is a well-established machinery manufacturer with a strong reputation for designing and building specialist equipment for demanding industrial manufacturing environments. This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing business with a strong order book, varied work, and genuine long-term opportunity.

This Mechanical Fitter / Mechanical Assembler role will focus on the mechanical assembly and build of bespoke machinery, working from initial build through to completion. You’ll be involved in proper hands-on fitting work, including sub-assembly, full machinery build, component installation, mechanical adjustment, alignment, and final build work.

The role

As a Mechanical Fitter / Mechanical Assembler, you’ll be involved in the mechanical build and assembly of bespoke production and process machinery.

The work will include:

  • Building and assembling bespoke machinery and production equipment from engineering drawings
  • Carrying out mechanical fitting, hand fitting, assembly, alignment, and adjustment work
  • Building sub-assemblies through to complete machinery assemblies
  • Installing and fitting mechanical components including shafts, gears, sprockets, bearings, gearboxes, and drive systems
  • Setting clearances, checking alignment, and making mechanical adjustments to ensure correct operation
  • Using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment including Verniers, height gauges, and similar inspection tools
  • Modifying or adjusting components where required to achieve the correct fit and finish
  • Working to high standards of accuracy, workmanship, and mechanical build quality
  • Supporting machinery refurbishment, rebuild, and modification projects when required

This is the type of role that would suit someone who enjoys seeing machinery come together from individual parts and assemblies, rather than carrying out repetitive production or maintenance-based work.

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in speaking with candidates who have experience in mechanical fitting, machinery assembly, machine building, bench fitting, or mechanical build work.

You’ll need:

  • Experience building, fitting, assembling, or installing machinery, production equipment, or mechanical systems
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Experience working with shafts, bearings, gearboxes, drive systems, or mechanical components/assemblies
  • Confident use of hand tools and power tools
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment
  • A good eye for detail and pride in quality workmanship
  • The ability to work as part of a hands-on machinery build team

Experience with bespoke machinery, process machinery, production machinery, conveyors, automated equipment, special purpose machinery, or heavy mechanical systems would be highly relevant.
